Helping women get online

Google India is to launch a mass media campaign to help 50 million women get online in one year.

The ‘Helping Women Get Online’ campaign kicked off today with a press conference and the launch of a website aimed at communicating the basics of the Internet to first-time female users in India.

The Internet can play an important role in empowering women in India and help them transform their lives. It can help women achieve self esteem and express their views freely, open up new opportunities and help them gain education. At the macro level, these benefits can translate into lowering maternal and infant mortality rates, a higher GDP of the country and improving standards of living.

Google India’s media campaign is targeted at women and also aims to promote the Web site www.hwgo.com. With over 200 million Internet users in the country and growing, India is on its way to become the second largest Internet market in the world overtaking the US. But only one third of India’s online users are women, Google India said in a statement.

Intel is also launching a mobile app called ‘Easy Step’ for women which would be available on Android Play store.
